Overview

Communal connections

All the workshops that David offers have a sharing circle at the beginning of the session to introduce David and the group. The sharing circle helps identify the expectations and desired outcomes of the workshop.

sharing perspectives

Workshops are varied and mostly time-based, but for all, options include observation of David carving, with group engagement throughout the process sharing perspectives, and he offers thoughts as he moves toward developing the shape of the sculpture. David continues throughout the workshop to ask the participants for input on desired shape, demonstrating techniques to achieve the communal goal.

Understanding materials

David’s demonstration will entail how a piece of wood changes by removing material that is sometimes undesirable due to a physical characteristic like rot/knots/cracks etc. David teaches how the properties of wood, due to cell direction, can be seen, and removing wood can add strength.

Visual support

There will be slide presentations and/or video of carving experiences for participants to view, learn and share their reflections.
