Class 1 begins with introductions and a sharing circle. The first day/stage is the bark stage. After personal introductions, desired outcomes are identified and discussed. Class 2 will again be a sharing circle depending on the size of the group. The second stage of the sculpture process will begin the cambium stage. David will share about the cambium in a tree, its properties.Tools will be given a greater explanation of how they are used and cared for. Wood will be removed and an initial shape will be formed.
Class 3 will again begin with a sharing circle, observations of changes will be shared. The third stage is the sapwood stage. David will share about the sapwood of a tree, its properties and how one works with it depending on the hardness and variety of wood. David will define the shape and the sculpture will become transformed again close to the final shape.
Class 4 will begin with a sharing circle, observations of changes will be shared. The fourth stage is the heartwood stage, in this stage history is shared about the journey and transformations that have occurred in the workshop sessions as well as in the wood/sculpture. Different tools will be introduced for finishing stages.
Class 5 will again begin with a sharing circle, observations of changes will be shared. The fifth stage is the pith stage, which is significant because it represents the beginning of the tree, and of our time together. There will be a meal/feast for this session before the carving happens. This stage will be the final touches to the sculpture and watering of the piece down. David will share what meaning is attached to the sculpture and ask for participants to share the meaning that has been developed for them. This will potentially be the last session and the sculpture will be oiled.
